Americans are a gloomy bunch these days with nearly half of those polled by The Hill in Washington D.C. saying they don’t ever think they’ll be rich.
While 47% said they didn’t think they would ever be rich, 37% thought it was still possible and 16% weren’t sure.
In a separate part of the poll, 31% said a family would be rich if they earned $250,000 or more, 19% placed the rich threshold at $100,000 and $7% said $50,000.
Another 19% said $500,000 makes one rich, 20% said $1 million and 4% weren’t sure.
The $250,000 income level is the amount President Barack Obama has said he wants to cut off Bush-era tax reductions.
The median U.S. household income in 2010 — the most recent data available — was $49,445, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In California, it was $54,459.
